Erin Bardwell Collective - Volume
1 Pop a Top Records 2003
Anyone who
believes that ’less is more’ might consider looking elsewhere because here
we have a huge collective consisting of 20 musicians. This madcap horde of ska-sheep
are being herded by Erin Bardwell, member of seminal UK ska band The Skanxters
(1991-1998). Bardwell also played with reggae outfit Unity and Specials’ cover
band More Specials.
His new band focuses on authentic rocksteady/skinhead reggae with an early
70’s dubby feel, often in a sentimental mood. Three black singers (Recoldo
Fleming, Solomon Holgate and Nevil Banton) provide soulful vocals, although a
little off-key on some songs.
This album is a surprisingly competent effort at recreating the pre-2 Tone spirit
on the dancefloors, although the album lacks definite hit potential. Great to
see a stylish band like this spring up seemingly out of nowhere.
